Fascia, which makes up the myofascial system, is the connective tissue of the body. It is a very tough, strong tissue and is the support system of the body, covering all of the major systems of the body. Dr. Rolf referred to Fascia as the organ of shape. It forms a continuous three-dimensional matrix throughout the body. Thus when one area of the body is affected by injury or dysfunction the rest of the body is affected.
Because fascia surrounds and penetrates every organ, muscle, bone and nerve in the body it determines the way the body is aligned. While healthy fascia allows tissues to glide past each other, unhealthy fascia has adhesions that cause pain, discomfort, and limited freedom of movement.
Adhesions in fascia can develop from injury, repetitive motion, surgery, stress, or any myriad of reasons. Structural Integration aims to release these adhesions thereby allowing the body to function naturally.
Who can benefit from Structural Integration?
People from all walks of life have benefitted from Structural Integration. Athletes, students of Yoga, musicians, factory workers, desk workers, basically anyone suffering from chronic pain and stress.
Nicholas’ clients have included all of these groups. Many have started growing old and felt beyond their years. Often, a lifetime of seemingly unrelated, minor injuries converge to create a body that just feels older than it should, and definitely older than the client wants it to feel.
Some of the benefits that draw people to Structural Integration include:
- Freedom from chronic pain
- increased flexibility
- increased freedom of movement
- Higher energy level
- Improved balance and coordination
- Heightened body awareness
- increased overall wellness
- improved posture
- Improved psychological wellbeing
- improved athletic performance
- increased breathing capacity
